The origin and history of Ambergris | Where Does it Come from?

Ambergris' long journey from the depth of the seas

The history, its origin and the journey that the rare ambergris (how it is widely used in perfumes today) takes during its life cycle is not only a unique one but rather one that is also shrouded in mystery. Ambergris comes from the hindgut of a sperm whale far deep in the depth of the oceans however, since the sperm whale leaves our world once they submerse, they take their secrets with along with them. Many aspects of the Ambergris's journey is still very unclear but what we do know, we will try to briefly shine a light on this topic throughout this article. Let's see if we can separate the theories from the facts.

A few facts worth noting about the sperm whale are it's precarious undersea life, its curious and oddly shaped body, the interesting positions of parts of their bodies such as the eyes (more on this in a bit) and what we do know about the process it takes for the sperm whale to produce Ambergris.

Measuring up to 60ft from end to end, the male sperm whale is till to this day the largest toothed whales species known. The odd thing about the sperm whale for one, is the random position nature has placed its eyes on its body. The eyes are placed 3/4 the way up its torpedo like body on the front end. Very interesting since it is like humans using their ears to see, they should never be able to see an object that is directly ahead of itself but can see all through what humans would call their peripheral vision. The sperm whale must eat roughly about a tone of food per day and eating for a sperm whale would seem like an arduous task. First they must deep sea dive between 650 to 3,300 feet below sea level to eat in many cases and the options for food are not as diverse as we would have it. They tend to devour hundreds of pounds of deep water squids and ranging from as small as a few ounces to more than 200 lb's in weight.

There's a story about a man named Robertson describing the sperm whale and it's Spermaceti (improperly called of course) and how although the purpose of this organ was unknown at the time and still till today the value of such oil contained inside of it was very well know, so harvesting this oil became very profitable even at those times and still valuable today. To delve a little more into how Robertson harvested this oil let’s start with how the workmen had to reach the fluid. First the workmen had to dig a whole into the cavity of the head. This in return caused the oil to flow like water off a well. In the process Robertson used a skimmer in order to remove it along with other substance from the brain. There is much more to the process than what is stated in this article. With enough online searches you can find out as many details as are widely available in the world concerning the process of Ambergris.
