The History of Perfumery and Perfumes

The History of Perfumery and Perfumes by the LaRoche Collection

Early Egypt and The history of Perfumes
Early Egypt
The earliest recorded dates for the use of perfumes were approximately 4,000 years ago when incense were used for embalming and during religious rituals. Egypt, the Middle East, and Ancient Greece were using fragrant oils on the skin but only the richest had access to it. When the Italian Renaissance appeared at the scene, perfumes were more easily available but still only in use by the wealthy. Over the next few decades perfumes were eventually used by people of all societal classes.

The industrial revolution for the United States during the 19th century changed the way perfumes were produced, mostly being crafted by hand but that changed when machines became best way to produce goods in large quantities more quickly and efficiently. Machine produced perfumes and goods are typically less expensive than hand crafted products, making perfumes more readily available to individual perfumers at a lower cost. However, companies like Etsy handcraft their perfumes allowing consumers to enjoy scents produced the traditional way.

Perfumers are also now able to sell their products from all over the world and ship them to consumers located anywhere at more affordable prices than ever before. The LaRoche Collection is a prime example of this type of marketplace being that it is a worldwide Middle Eastern perfume company established by Mr. LaRoche, providing the exclusive collections of the Ambergris, Agarwood, and Dehn Al Oud.

The ingredients of Ambergris are still unknown but scientists believe that the waxy, gray-black substance used is produced by sperm whales but where it comes from is still up for debate. It is believed that the whale’s body produces the substance defending itself from irritants in the digestive system, concealing a foreign substance and discharging it. At one point it was theorized that the whale regurgitated the substance but as of now it’s thought to be digestive waste much like fecal matter.

It may seem repulsive to use fecal matter in a perfume that touches the skin but after smelling the scent it can be understood as to why it’s used. The perfume has a sweet and earthy scent that is unlike any scent in the world that persists for a long period of time, a very sought after scent by perfumers.

Agarwood is a resin with a unique scent that can’t be duplicated. The natural resin has been known as oud, oodh, and agar, a highly desired for its wonderful fragrance. It is only as of late that the perfume has been marketed in North America and abroad to a new generation interested in an exotic fragrance.

Dehn Al Ouhd is a fragrant oil that is procured from the wood of tropical trees from certain species of the Agar or Aquilaria family. The aromatic oil is made from a resin that grows inside of the trees as a sort of defense mechanism. If the bark of the tree becomes marred or pests infest the wood, the tree produces the resin to conserve itself.

The agarwood resin grows deep inside of the center of the tree and approximately 10 percent of the Aquillaria trees produce agarwood. The only way to know if the tree produces this resin is if it is cut down, resulting in Dehn Al Ouhd being more expensive. The oil is priced at one and a half more expensive than gold because the oil is so scarce.

The LaRoche Collection is available for purchase via Ebay, Etsy, and the Agarscents Bazaar website.
